The GIBL was created in 1978 to promote basketball in Grennia. Over the years, the league quickly expanded and became its own icon,
especially after a boom in basketball-related pop culture in the 1990s and 2000s. The season usually runs from mid March to late September.

The league is played in a basic tournament bracket style, with 16 teams from all over Grennia competing in the season to win the Island Bracket
at the end of the season.
