The GASO was created in 1974, when the popularity of recreational diving expanded.
It originally was made to help with the certification of divers, but the organisation soon expanded to have a sports committee to
handle underwater sport activities and a science committee to certify divers interested in underwater science.
There is also a major branch which administers Grennian competitive swimming.
