Grennia's anthem takes the tune of a Korean folk song known as
"Spring in the Hometown" composed by Hong Nan Pa.
The
tune was decided as a new national anthem in 2005 to coincide with the
independence ceremony from the United Kingdom.
The reason why
this tune was ultimately chosen on was because the lead of the committee
for choosing a new anthem was of Korean ancestry and was not
satisfied with any of the original compositions for the anthem submitted;
as a result he simply took the tune of "Spring in the
Hometown" and added new lyrics to the song. The tune was also in use
by various pro-independence groups in the early 1990s.
The
anthem has no Japanese lyrics, and is only sung in English.
Below is a recording of the song by the Ivy String Quartet.
